Collaborative Piano Program

June 7-15, 2024

California State University,

Sacramento

Operation Opera is a pioneering 9-day summer music festival and academy that provides a stimulating platform for collaborative pianists to engage with the forefront of contemporary chamber opera and art song performance. Within this innovative environment, pianists work intimately with composers, vocalists, and the ensemble-in-residence ---- an opportunity to perform and collaborate directly with the celebrated musicians of Hub New Music.

  • Six new chamber operas will be selected through an international call for scores.

  • Art song composers will be paired with singer-participants, collaborative pianists, and additional instruments by Hub New Music (optional) to create and rehearse new art songs for premiere at the festival.

  • This year’s ensemble-in-residence, which will premiere the chamber operas, is the Boston-based quartet Hub New Music (hubnewmusic.com), which has been called “contemporary chamber trailblazers” by the Boston Globe. Pianists will join the ensemble in performing the piano part in the six chamber operas under the baton of resident conductors.

  • Together with composers, vocalists, and Hub New Music, collaborative pianists will participate in a variety of career-enhancing, professional activities at Sacramento State, including masterclasses, presentations, individual coachings with festival and guest faculty, stage and concert rehearsals – all culminating in final performances open to the public.
